Last month in Amsterdam, at a Cparity Event, Danielle IJkema and I offered participants a short experiential flavour of ๐—›๐—˜๐—Ÿ๐—œ๐—•๐—Ÿ๐—œ๐—–๐—žโ€™๐˜€ ๐—Ÿ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ฝ ๐—ฃ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ด๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—บ:

Together with three groups of ๐—Ÿ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€, we simulated a ๐—–๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ฒ๐˜… ๐—–๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐˜€๐˜€-๐—™๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—•๐˜‚๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜€ ๐—ฆ๐—ถ๐˜๐˜‚๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป involving seasonal promotional demand, late product changes during launch, capacity constraints and long material lead times โ€” resulting in ๐—ฅ๐—ฒ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜‚๐—ฒ ๐—ฅ๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ธ on one side and ๐—ช๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐˜๐—ฒ-๐—ข๐—ณ๐—ณ ๐—ฅ๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ธ on the other.

First, the teams followed a โ‘  โŒ ๐—ง๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—”๐—ฝ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐—ต.
Later, we applied โ‘ก โœ… ๐—ฆ๐˜†๐˜€๐˜๐—ฒ๐—บ-๐—Ÿ๐—ฒ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—น ๐—ฆ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜€๐—ฒ-๐— ๐—ฎ๐—ธ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด.

Functional representatives advocated for their own interests and agreed on an action plan. The groups explored the ๐—ฆ๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ธ๐—ฒ๐—ต๐—ผ๐—น๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐—š๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฝ๐˜€ โ€” customers, suppliers, employees, shareholders โ€” their needs and the ๐—˜๐˜€๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—œ๐—บ๐—ฝ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐˜ of the situation.

The difference was immediately visible.
In โ‘  โŒ, energy went into ๐๐ž๐›๐š๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐  and defending points.
In โ‘ก โœ…, people ๐—Ÿ๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐—ฑ, built on each otherโ€™s thinking, and engaged in ๐—ฅ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—น ๐——๐—ถ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ผ๐—ด๐˜‚๐—ฒ. Body language changed. The room calmed down.

Participants described โ‘  โŒ as ๐—ฆ๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜€๐—ณ๐˜‚๐—น and ๐—จ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐—น๐—ฒ.
They experienced โ‘ก โœ… as ๐—ฅ๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ฎ๐˜…๐—ฒ๐—ฑ, ๐—˜๐—ป๐—ด๐—ฎ๐—ด๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด โ€” and far more ๐—ฃ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ฑ๐˜‚๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ in creating a ๐— ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด๐—ณ๐˜‚๐—น ๐—”๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—Ÿ๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜.
